1664 DNA note: Oct1, 2019 There is a dna match in Ancestry.com. ThruLines says that between the match and the known ancestor (Reason Naylor), there are 2 levels. The tree shows a “Howard Martin (1919-1988)” as the husband of Reason’s daughter, Helen Marie Naylor Martin. It looks like the son may also be a Gregory Martin, and then “dmart1122” (the name of the match, a male, son of Howard Martin Jr.) would also be a “Martin”. His official name is unknown at this time. MARTIN, dmart1122 (I1878)

1665 DNA note: the granddaughter of Emil Makeeff and Ruth W Hovis is a DNA match --3C, 39 cM (Lindsey Frohlich). The connection is private (Spt2019). Bryant may not be her father as there were other children also. (Jan.2020) MAKEEFF, Bryant William (I1643)

1667 DNA NOTES:
- Rachel Makeeff (128 cMs) is a match to me. She is likely the granddaughter of Clinton Hovis and Louise Berger; possibly the daugher of Ruth Hovis and Emil Makeeff. No documentation to support this. (Jan16, 2020, this match is not registered onThruLines.)
- Lindsey Frohlich (39 cMs) is a match to me. She is possibly the granddaughter of Ruth Hovis and Emil Makeeff, great granddaughter of Clinton and Louise Hovis. Connections are still private (Sept2019). It is unknown how Lindsey and Rachel might be related.

CENSUS 1930: Ruth Hovis 16 was living with her mother Louise47 and siblings: Leown17, VInsonW12, JuniorC11, LoisC8 Hovis in Greybull, Wyoming.
(Her father, Clinton P Hovis, was already in Canada. The census was done April 7, 1930. May 30, 1930, she came to Canada. There is no record of that border crossing, but it is mentioned on the Border Crossing when she returned to the US (Feb.17, 1938). She returned by herself and referenced her friend Mrs Pat Buckley in Sweetgrass, Montana. She was 24 and still single at that time.

Gross Scruggs' will was dated July 12, 1787, and probated in Bedford County, July 28, 1788, in which he leaves all of his estate, both real and personal, to his wife Elizabeth, and at her death to her nephew William Arthur, son of Benjamin Arthur, with a legacy to Gross Scruggs, son of Thomas Scruggs, of fifty pounds current money. He makes his wife executrix, and his brother Thomas Scruggs with Edmund Winston, executors. The will was sealed in the presence of Thomas Arthur, Anne Brown, Boyce Edison." 1671 Dunklin (p. 43-45) states that Gross (reference I.4.3.5) married about 4 times: Nancy Logwood, Mary Tate, the widow Jones, and the widow Shotwell, and lists multiple children; these spouses and children are not included in this database.

"GROSS SCRUGGS, third son of Thomas Scruggs, was born in Virginia, 1769. He went to Kentucky with his father and brothers in 1793-94, but did not remain. He went from there to Tennessee, and on back to Virginia, and finally settled in Alabama on a large plantation, near Huntsville, Madison County. It is said he caused quite a sensation upon his arrival in Alabama, as he came in his coach-and-four, with out-riders. He married four times, first in Bedford County, Virginia, May 31, 1792. Nancy Logwood ; secondly, in Bedford County, Virginia. October 17, 1805,' Mary (called "Polly") Tate, who died September 19, 1832. "Gross Scruggs had no issue by his last two wives. He was a prominent man of his times, and amassed quite a fortune, which, at his death, became divided amongst his numerous children. He died in Alabama on his plantation, in 1856, at the advanced age of ninety-five years, blind, but in full possession of his mental faculties." (p. 45)

NOTE: The Genealogy of the Harris & Aliied Families, p.100-102 gives more detail about Gross Scruggs, son of Thomas (b.1767). It says that he was born in 1769 and he lived to the age of 95. That would mean he died in 1864. But in fact he died in 1856, he was only 87 years old.
