    LETA I. ROOT

    HASTINGS - LETA I. ROOT, age 88, of Hastings, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at Carveth Village in Middleville. She was born on a rural Hastings area farm July 8, 1913 to REASON and ALTA (FOSTER) NAYLOR.

    In 1935 Leta married HOMER CRONK and continued farming, and they had three sons GORDON, WILLIAM (JIM), and ROGER.

    In 1953 Homer and son, Jim, passed away, at which time Leta went to work for Orchard Industries, and met and later married WILLIAM ROOT JR. Later L[e]ta worked for Hastings Aluminum Products until her retirement. William passed away in 1977. Leta was a member of the Nashville VFW Auxiliary.

    She was preceded in death by husbands, HOMER CRONK and WILLIAM ROOT JR., son WILLIAM JAMES CRONK; grandson, ERIC ROGER CRONK; brothers, HOWARD NAYLOR, CARL NAYLOR, EARL NAYLOR, NORMAN NAYLOR; sisters, REA (NAYLOR) CALLIHAN, LINNIE (NAYLOR) PATRICK, NEVA (NAYLOR) NEIL.

    Surviving are sons, GORDON (BONNIE) CRONK of Freeport, ROGER (JEAN) CRONK of Woodland; sister, HELEN FURROW of Hastings; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

    Graveside services were held Saturday, March 16, 2002 at Hastings Township Cemetery. Rev. George Speas officiated. Memorials can be made to Barry Community Hospice or Barry County Commission on Aging. Arrangements are by the Girrbach Funeral Home in Hastings.

    The 50th anniversary newspaper announcement states that Reason and Alta" moved to Michigan to his father's farm... They resided there 7 years. After that period they moved to the Eli Charlton farm, on the Charlton park road, living there 35-1/2 years. They moved to their Walnut street home in August of 1945 )3-1 E Walnut). Mr Naylor worked for the Barry County Lumber company for three years, and now is retired. He was 1973 last January. Mrs Naylor is now 69 years old. THeir children include Mrs. Arthur Callihan, Battle Creek; Mrs. J L Patrick, Hastins; Mrs Homer Cronk, Route 1, Hastings; Mrs Lyle Neil, Route 3 Hastings, Mrs Howard Martin, Jr., Hastings; Howard Naylor, Bellevuek Neb., and Carl Naylor, Route 1, Hastings.     NOTES: The obituary for R.E. Naylor: states: "Funeral services for Reason E Naylor, 74, 301 E. Walnut, who died Wednesday morning at Pennock hospital following a long illness, will be held at 2 pm Friday at the Leonard Funeral home. The Rev. O H Trinklein is to officiate and burial will be in the Hastings township cemetery. Mr Naylor had resided in Hastings since he retired in August of 1945 because of poor health. He wa born on Jahn.11, 1879 near Gibsonburg, Ohio, the son of Henry F and Hattie T (Miller) Naylor. On April 23, 1920, he was married to Miss Alta Foster, of Pemberville, Ohio, and the int he spinrg of 1903 they came to Michigan to reside on his parents' farm in Hastings township. Mr and Mrs. Naylor lived there until March 26, 1910, when they moved to the farm on the Charlton park road where they resided 35-1/2 years until retiring. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Authur (Rhea) Callihan, 40 Eldridge, Battle Creek; Mrs J L (Linnie) Patrick, 101 W Marshall; Mrs Homer (Leta) Cronk, Route 1, Hastings; Mrs Lyle (Neva) Neil, Route 3, Hastings, and Mrs Howard (Helen) Martin Jr., 1020 S Park; two sons, Howard, of Bellevue, Neb., and Carl, of Route 1, Hastings, grandchildren and many friends."
