Notes: HISTORY: Dunklin (p. 28) says that Richard Scruggs (ref I-3-2) "son of Richard Scruggs by his wife Martha, was born in Virginia, January 10, 1720. Went with his wife and five children (also eight slaves) to the Georgia Province, and settled in St. Matthew's Parish, afterwards called Effingham County, 1757. He received land grants from the Colonial and State Governments from 1760 to 1768, being known thereby as a "Headright." He was a very prominent man and held the position of Gentleman Justice of St. Matthew's Parish November 1874-1766." (name of wife and 5 children are not mentioned.
