    HISTORY: Dunklin (p. 28) says that Richard Scruggs (ref I-3-2) "son of Richard Scruggs by his wife Martha, was born in Virginia, January 10, 1720. Went with his wife and five children (also eight slaves) to the Georgia Province, and settled in St. Matthew's Parish, afterwards called Effingham County, 1757. He received land grants from the Colonial and State Governments from 1760 to 1768, being known thereby as a "Headright." He was a very prominent man and held the position of Gentleman Justice of St. Matthew's Parish November 1874-1766." (name of wife and 5 children are not mentioned.

    "Richard Scruggs was granted two hundred and thirty acres in Goochland County, Virginia, in 1755, which grant had been previously owned by Drury Scruggs, who, failing to make the necessary improvements, forfeited same." (Dunklin, p.25)

    Dunklin says (p.23): HENERY SCRUGGS (ref I.)," son of Richard Scruggs, Gentleman, of New Kent County, Virginia, was married in St. Peter's Parish January 25, 1685-6, to Anne Grose." Their children are listed as Henry, John, Richard, Thomas, Edward, Mary, Anne. He is also mentioned on p.22, 24, 25.

    It was originally in Bedford County (Virginia). After the division of Bedford and Franklin Counties … “Scruggs” became situated in the northern part of Franklin County, two miles from the present Bedford County line. The town of “Scruggs” in Cole County, Missouri, is situated near Jefferson City, the State Capitol.

    HISTORY: (Dunklin, p.16) Towns Named "Scruggs", Bedford County, Virginia. Cole County, Missouri
    Bedford County was formed in 1753 out of Lunenburg and was named for the fourth Duke of Bedford. It comprised what is known as Bedford, Campbell and a part of Franklin Countries.
    Campbell County was cut from Bedford County on the southeast in 1781, and subsequently, in 1784, the County of Franklin was cut on the south side.
    The town of "Scruggs" was originially in Bedford County, and was named in honor of that branch of the Scruggs family that settled there. After the division of Bedford and Franklin Counties, however, "SCRUGGS" became situated in the northern part of Franklin County, two miles from the present Bedford County line. The town of "SCRUGGS" in Cole County, Missouri, is isutated near Jefferson City, the State Capitol."

    HISTORY: list as a Virginia Colonial Soldier in 1702 (both John Scruggs and Henry Scruggs). These could be the sons of Henery, not himself.
