HISTORY: Dunklin says i)_REAVES SCOTT SCRUGGS, eldest son of Thomas Scruggs by his second wife Jane Scott, was born in Virginia, November, 1799. He was an influential planter in Bedford County, Virginia, and a political leader, representing the county in the State Legislature in 1S46-7, and in 1847-8. In a recent letter received from Mr. Roland D. Buford, late Clerk of the County Court of Bedford County, he speaks of Reaves Scott Scruggs as follows:
"Reaves Scott Scruggs was a gentleman of more than ordinary intelligence, and a fair scholar; his chyrography was exceptional, and he was a gentleman of elegant and cultured manners.
"His last sickness was immediately preceded by a sudden attack in my office, and as he was falling I caught him in my arms and prevented his fall to the floor. His first wife was a first cousin to my sainted mother."
Reaves Scott Scruggs married twice; first, 1820, Mildred Leftwich Otey, born 1803, the daughter of Frazier Otey and his wife ^Mildred Leftwich,* and granddaughter of Captain John Otey, the Revolutionary soldier, and Mary Hopkins, his wife. He married secondly Sephia Cobbs. He died 1873. He had issue by his first wife." These were James (1821-), Richard Mitchell (1822-), Ella Jane [John W. Holt], another unnamed, William Reaves (1828-), Elizabeth/Betty [James R Holt], Thomas, Sarah/Sallie, Edward G., Mildred L. [William Kinnen], Gus A., Charles Otey (p.45-47) and 2 more by his second wife: John M. [Annie Booth], Virginia R. [T.E. Cobbs] (p.47)

    • Reference Number: 200

    Notes:

HISTORY: This Thomas is reference I.4.3 in Dunklin. Dunklin does not mention the name of his first wife. That comes from Ancestry family trees. Their children are listed as William, Elizabeth (Betsy), Thomas Jr., Martha (Patsy), Gross. (See Dunklin, p. 26,31-32.)

"Thomas Scruggs, after the death of his first wife, and about the year 1793-94, went to Scott County, Kentucky, with his five grown children, and settled them there (with the exception of his son Gross, who returned to Virginia). He gave to each, adjoining tracts of land near "Lindsay Station," about twelve miles from the city of Frankfort, and known to this day as the "Old Scruggs' Place." He gave, in addition, to his eldest son, William, two valuable slaves, man and wife, named Kiah and Joan, who had been among his own, trusted, faithful servants, and who were said to possess unusual sagacity, common sense and loyalty. These slaves, or their increase, continued in the family some time after the close of the Civil War. Thomas Scruggs returned from Kentucky to Virginia prior to 1798, and was married there to Jane Scott, the daughter of Walter Scott of Bedford County, by whom he had issue: Reaves Scott born in Bedford County, Virginia, November, 1799, Richard Mitchell, born in Bedford County, Virginia, 1802." (Dunklin, p. 32)

"Thomas Scruggs' will was dated November 17, 1801, and probated in Bedford County, Virginia, October 22, 1804, in which he leaves his real and personal estate to his loving wife Jane, and at her death to be equally divided between her two children. To the elder son Reaves Scott, at his majority, he bequeathes two negroes, man and wife, named Sampson and Joannah. He appoints his son Gross Scruggs and his wife Jane Scruggs, executors.
The will is sealed, signed and delivered in the "presents" [sic] of Abner Ferrel, Henry Buford, Sr., Ursley G. Scott." (Dunklin, p.33)

    Other Events and Attributes:

  1. 4.  Thomas SCRUGGS was born in 1694 in New Kent, Virginia, USA (son of Henery SCRUGGS and Anne GROSE); died in 1788 in Cumberland County, Virginia, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Reference Number: 275

    Notes:

HISTORY: THOMAS SCRUGGS (reference I.4), "son of Henry Scruggs by his wife Anne Grose, was bom in New Kent County, Virginia. He married twice, firstly Mitchell, a sister of Valentine Mitchell. He married secondly Juday Buford. Thomas Scruggs moved from New Kent County to Buckingham County and settled just prior to his death in Cumberland, where his will was dated April 26, 1788, in which he mentions his wife, his son Drury and his grandson Finch Scruggs, and 'my other children.' The will is signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of Thomas Scrugs [sic], Obedier Scrugs [sic], William Anderson." (Dunklin, p.25; See also p.23.)

Dunklin does not distinguish which wife had the 5 children mentioned by Dunklin.

Note: Dunklin and other researchers have posited that Thomas was married a second time, to “Juday Buford” and may have had one son by her. Several researchers on ancestry.com posit that they married on March 1, 1787; he would have been around 93 years of age. It seems to me to be suspicious that his grandson, Thomas3, married Judith Buford on the same day. This second marriage of Thomas1 needs more research.

    Died:
    Will dated April 26, 1788

Thomas married Elizabeth MITCHELL about 1716 in New Kent, St. Peter's Parish, Virginia, USA. Elizabeth was born on 20 Feb 1702 in New Kent, St. Peter's Parish, Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
