HISTORY: "Dec. 18, 1856, Capt. W. S. Murphy, who with Simeon Scruggs, established the pioneer saw mill in Leavenworth that sawed the lumber from which the town was built, died at Weston." from December Events, Scrap (online source) http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/leavenwo/library/Scraps/Scraps10.htm, accessed August 12, 2013

HISTORY: from Wichita Daily Eagle. 6 Jun 1884 Atchison, KS. Known in Leavenworth, KS as Captain Simeon Scruggs. Simeon Scruggs and William S. Murphy owned a Leavenworth sawmill (1854). After the death of W.S. Murphy, the sawmill closed, about 1859. Simeon them moved to Kickapoo.
One of the earliest and most valuable institutions of Leavenworth, in the way of buildings, which commenced to flourish at this time, was the saw mill of Murphy & Scruggs, at the mouth of Three-Mills Creek, north side. Capt. W. S. Murphy and Capt. Simeon Scruggs were partners and completed the mill in the fall of 1854, so that they were able to issue the following advertisement in October: "Murphy & Scruggs have erected and have in successful operation at Leavenworth, K. T., a large steam saw mill of the most approved model and with all the recent improvements. They are ready to fill bills for lumber of every description and in quantity at the shortest notice and on favorable terms." This was the first saw mill not only in the county, but in the Territory. Although they made considerable money, the death of Capt. Murphy, and subsequent legal complications, so disarranged and consumed the partnership property that Capt. Scruggs lost nearly all his share in Leavenworth and retired to his farm near Kickapoo.

HISTORY: This Thomas is reference I.4.3 in Dunklin. Dunklin does not mention the name of his first wife. That comes from Ancestry family trees. Their children are listed as William, Elizabeth (Betsy), Thomas Jr., Martha (Patsy), Gross. (See Dunklin, p. 26,31-32.)

"Thomas Scruggs, after the death of his first wife, and about the year 1793-94, went to Scott County, Kentucky, with his five grown children, and settled them there (with the exception of his son Gross, who returned to Virginia). He gave to each, adjoining tracts of land near "Lindsay Station," about twelve miles from the city of Frankfort, and known to this day as the "Old Scruggs' Place." He gave, in addition, to his eldest son, William, two valuable slaves, man and wife, named Kiah and Joan, who had been among his own, trusted, faithful servants, and who were said to possess unusual sagacity, common sense and loyalty. These slaves, or their increase, continued in the family some time after the close of the Civil War. Thomas Scruggs returned from Kentucky to Virginia prior to 1798, and was married there to Jane Scott, the daughter of Walter Scott of Bedford County, by whom he had issue: Reaves Scott born in Bedford County, Virginia, November, 1799, Richard Mitchell, born in Bedford County, Virginia, 1802." (Dunklin, p. 32)

"Thomas Scruggs' will was dated November 17, 1801, and probated in Bedford County, Virginia, October 22, 1804, in which he leaves his real and personal estate to his loving wife Jane, and at her death to be equally divided between her two children. To the elder son Reaves Scott, at his majority, he bequeathes two negroes, man and wife, named Sampson and Joannah. He appoints his son Gross Scruggs and his wife Jane Scruggs, executors.
The will is sealed, signed and delivered in the "presents" [sic] of Abner Ferrel, Henry Buford, Sr., Ursley G. Scott." (Dunklin, p.33)

NOTE: Thomas remarried in 1797 to Jane Scott. But, if Susannah died in 1810, this means that she and Thomas divorced. Is that what happened? Some Ancestry family trees do not list Thomas' second wife. There are also conflicting dates about his death and about Susannah's brith date.

  1. 8.  Thomas SCRUGGS was born in 1694 in New Kent, Virginia, USA (son of Henery SCRUGGS and Anne GROSE); died in 1788 in Cumberland County, Virginia, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Reference Number: 275

    Notes:

HISTORY: THOMAS SCRUGGS (reference I.4), "son of Henry Scruggs by his wife Anne Grose, was bom in New Kent County, Virginia. He married twice, firstly Mitchell, a sister of Valentine Mitchell. He married secondly Juday Buford. Thomas Scruggs moved from New Kent County to Buckingham County and settled just prior to his death in Cumberland, where his will was dated April 26, 1788, in which he mentions his wife, his son Drury and his grandson Finch Scruggs, and 'my other children.' The will is signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of Thomas Scrugs [sic], Obedier Scrugs [sic], William Anderson." (Dunklin, p.25; See also p.23.)

Dunklin does not distinguish which wife had the 5 children mentioned by Dunklin.

Note: Dunklin and other researchers have posited that Thomas was married a second time, to “Juday Buford” and may have had one son by her. Several researchers on ancestry.com posit that they married on March 1, 1787; he would have been around 93 years of age. It seems to me to be suspicious that his grandson, Thomas3, married Judith Buford on the same day. This second marriage of Thomas1 needs more research.

    Died:
    Will dated April 26, 1788

Thomas married Elizabeth MITCHELL about 1716 in New Kent, St. Peter's Parish, Virginia, USA. Elizabeth was born on 20 Feb 1702 in New Kent, St. Peter's Parish, Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Reference Number: 276

    Notes:

Dunklin (p.25) does not give Ms Mitchell's first name; that comes from Ancestry family trees. She is a sister of Valentine Mitchell.
