    • HISTORY: Dunklin says i)_REAVES SCOTT SCRUGGS, eldest son of Thomas Scruggs by his second wife Jane Scott, was born in Virginia, November, 1799. He was an influential planter in Bedford County, Virginia, and a political leader, representing the county in the State Legislature in 1S46-7, and in 1847-8. In a recent letter received from Mr. Roland D. Buford, late Clerk of the County Court of Bedford County, he speaks of Reaves Scott Scruggs as follows:
"Reaves Scott Scruggs was a gentleman of more than ordinary intelligence, and a fair scholar; his chyrography was exceptional, and he was a gentleman of elegant and cultured manners.
"His last sickness was immediately preceded by a sudden attack in my office, and as he was falling I caught him in my arms and prevented his fall to the floor. His first wife was a first cousin to my sainted mother."
Reaves Scott Scruggs married twice; first, 1820, Mildred Leftwich Otey, born 1803, the daughter of Frazier Otey and his wife ^Mildred Leftwich,* and granddaughter of Captain John Otey, the Revolutionary soldier, and Mary Hopkins, his wife. He married secondly Sephia Cobbs. He died 1873. He had issue by his first wife." These were James (1821-), Richard Mitchell (1822-), Ella Jane [John W. Holt], another unnamed, William Reaves (1828-), Elizabeth/Betty [James R Holt], Thomas, Sarah/Sallie, Edward G., Mildred L.
