  • Notes
    • Dunklin (p. 43-45) states that Gross (reference I.4.3.5) married about 4 times: Nancy Logwood, Mary Tate, the widow Jones, and the widow Shotwell, and lists multiple children; these spouses and children are not included in this database.

"GROSS SCRUGGS, third son of Thomas Scruggs, was born in Virginia, 1769. He went to Kentucky with his father and brothers in 1793-94, but did not remain. He went from there to Tennessee, and on back to Virginia, and finally settled in Alabama on a large plantation, near Huntsville, Madison County. It is said he caused quite a sensation upon his arrival in Alabama, as he came in his coach-and-four, with out-riders. He married four times, first in Bedford County, Virginia, May 31, 1792. Nancy Logwood ; secondly, in Bedford County, Virginia. October 17, 1805,' Mary (called "Polly") Tate, who died September 19, 1832. He married, thirdly, in Alabama, the widow Jones, and fourthly, in Alabama, the widow Shotwell. Gross Scruggs had issue by Nancy Logwood." (p.43) The children were Thomas b.1793, William b.1795, Gross b.1796, Edmond b.1798, Ann, b.1800, Mary b.1803, Martha b.1804. (p.43-44)

"Nancy Logwood Scruggs was a sister of Kitty Logwood and a first cousin of Mary Otey Leftwich, who married Pleasant Goggin, brother to Pamelia Goggin, the wife of Samuel Clemens, from whom we have 'Mark Twain'. Gross Scruggs had issue by Mary Tate" (p. 44) The children were Elizabeth b.1807, Emily b.1809, Sarah b.1811, Pamelia b.1813, Julia b.1815, John b.1817, James b.1819, Margaret b.1821, Harriet b.1823, Elouise b.1826." (p. 44-45).

"Gross Scruggs had no issue by his last two wives. He was a prominent man of his times, and amassed quite a fortune, which, at his death, became divided amongst his numerous children. He died in Alabama on his plantation, in 1856, at the advanced age of ninety-five years, blind, but in full possession of his mental faculties." (p. 45)

NOTE: The Genealogy of the Harris & Aliied Families, p.100-102 gives more detail about Gross Scruggs, son of Thomas (b.1767). It says that he was born in 1769 and he lived to the age of 95. That would mean he died in 1864. But in fact he died in 1856, he was only 87 years old.
